How do I take care of my…

Flower Bowl

  • Replace the water in your flower bowl every second day. To do so, hold your bowl over a sink and gently pour the water out of the bowl, using your free hand to hold the blooms in place. Re-fill your bowl with clean, room-temperature water until stems are submerged.
  • Many flowers in your bowl will be long-lasting. Pull out tired looking blooms as needed and re-arrange remaining blooms to enjoy a minimalist design.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are one of our favourite blooms. They do require special care, because they are thirsty flowers! Follow these tips to extend the life and enjoyment of your hydrangea.

  • Trim your hydrangea every day.
  • Change the water in your hydrangea (or hydrangea arrangement) every day. Replace older water with fresh, warm water. The warm water will encourage your flower to drink more.
  • If you notice that your hydrangea is taking on a wilted or droopy appearance, do not panic. Simply take the hydrangea out of the arrangement, trim its stem and place the trimmed flower into a separate vase of very warm water. The surge of warm water will revive your hydrangea quickly—you should see the head of the flower straighten and the petals should re-gain their original shape and structure. If you act as soon as possible, these steps can save your hydrangea, but if your flower becomes limp and weak, it will be too late to revive it.
  • Think about this: the bigger the bloom, the more water the flower needs. This results in a little more care.

Potted Plants

  • Keep your plant in medium natural light and out of direct sunlight.
  • Make sure the soil of your plant is moist (neither too wet or too dry), and avoid wetting the leaves.
  • Avoid placing your plant is excessively hot or cold locations. Keep your plants out of direct sunlight, heat and direct air-conditioning.
  • Is your plant looking limp and lifeless? Add water and sunshine. Are leaves turning yellow and falling off? Your plant is likely sitting in too much water and drowning. Test different options to see which habits make your plant thrive. Then, keep it going.

Air Plant

  • Give it a water bath for 20-30 minutes every two weeks.
  • Mist your air plant using clean water in a spray bottle once a week.
  • Keep flowers out of direct sunlight, heat and direct air-conditioning.

Succulent

  • Potted succulent: Water your succulent thoroughly once every two weeks. Let your plant dry out almost completely between waterings.
  • Cut succulent: Using clean water and a spray bottle, mist your succulent once a week to keep it hydrated. Do not let your cut succulent sit in standing water.
  • If leaves appear yellow, then you are over-watering your succulent. Let your plant dry out completely, then try to resume a watering schedule. If leaves appear wilted and soft, your succulent is thirsty. Try watering your plant more often to keep it healthy.
  • All succulents grow best in filtered sunlight. Limit exposure to temperature extremes.

Phalaenopsis Orchid

Orchids thrive in warm, humid climates—so Edmonton is not the ideal environment for these elegant plants. Still want them in your life? Of course! Here’s how to best care for them in our sunny, dry world.

  • Place two ice cubes at the base of your orchid plant and allow to melt 1-2 times a week
  • Keep out of direct sunlight, heat and air conditioning.
  • Do not touch your orchid too often. They don’t like to be fussed with. They do like to be sung to, though. Definitely try singing.

Fungus Gnats

Oh no! Fungus gnats look like tiny flies and hatch in the soil once your plant enters your warm cosy home. Here is a recipe to kill them:

  • 1 part hydrogen peroxide
  • 4 parts water
  • mix solution and water plants as usual- this mix kills larvae in the soil on contact.
